Exosomes for the face: what they are, how they are applied and what to expect
Updated on · the Biutiful by Grama Aesthetics team, Cluj-Napoca
Exosomes are tiny vesicles carrying proteins and growth factors that pass signals between cells. In aesthetics they are applied to the skin after microneedling or with needle-free mesotherapy, for radiance, texture and skin renewal. Early results are promising, but studies are still few, so we treat them as a valuable add-on, not a miracle.
What exosomes are
Exosomes are the messengers of cells: nanometre-sized particles that carry proteins, lipids and genetic material from one cell to another. Cosmetic exosome products use them to support the skin’s natural renewal. They are not "stem cells" and contain no living cells.
How we apply them
- Microneedling + exosomes: controlled micro-channels in the skin let the exosome serum penetrate better; suited to texture, pores, fine scars and tired skin.
- Needle-free mesotherapy with exosomes + radiofrequency + ultrasound: for radiance and firmness, with no days of redness.

What to expect
The skin usually looks brighter and more rested in the first days, and texture improves over the following weeks. We recommend a series of 3–4 sessions. After microneedling, redness generally lasts 1–2 days.
Clinical studies on exosomes in aesthetics are still at an early stage, and products differ between manufacturers. That is why we do not promise a "lifting" effect; for deep firmness we recommend HIFU or radiofrequency.
When it should not be done
- active inflamed acne, cold sores or skin infections in the treated area;
- pregnancy and breastfeeding;
- isotretinoin treatment in recent months;
- a tendency to keloid scars (for microneedling).
Frequently asked questions
Are exosomes the same as stem cells?
No. Exosomes are particles secreted by cells, with no living cells. The term "stem cells" used in adverts for these products is misleading.
How many exosome sessions are needed?
Usually a series of 3–4 sessions, a few weeks apart, then maintenance. We set the details at the consultation, based on your skin.
Exosomes or plain microneedling?
Microneedling alone stimulates collagen. Adding exosomes aims to support skin renewal and radiance; it is a premium option, not a must.
