HIFU: a non-surgical facelift — how it works and how long it lasts

Updated on · the Biutiful by Grama Aesthetics team, Cluj-Napoca

HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) creates small points of heat in the deep layers of the skin, including the layer a surgical facelift tightens. The body responds with new collagen, and the facial contour, double chin and neck tighten gradually over 2–3 months. It is done once or twice a year and suits mild to moderate laxity.

How it works

The device sends focused ultrasound to three different depths. At the focal points the tissue heats up in a controlled way, without affecting the skin surface. These micro thermal points start a natural renewal process, with new collagen, that continues for months after the session.

Who it suits

  • a less defined facial contour, a mild double chin, a sagging neck;
  • less firm skin after weight loss;
  • people who want a natural effect with no downtime.

It does not replace a surgical facelift when the skin is very loose. We will tell you at the consultation whether you are a good candidate.

When results show and how long they last

A slight tightening is sometimes visible right away, but the real result builds gradually over 2–3 months. The effect usually lasts up to a year, depending on age and lifestyle; that is why we recommend 1–2 sessions a year.

When it should not be done

  • pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • infections, lesions or severe acne in the treated area;
  • metal implants or recent thread lifts in the treated area;
  • skin conditions in a flare.

Frequently asked questions

Does HIFU hurt?

You feel short, warm pricks over the bonier areas. It is bearable, and the pace is adjusted to your comfort.

Is there downtime after HIFU?

No. Mild redness or tenderness can last a few hours or days; you go straight back to your usual activities.

Is HIFU the same as Ultherapy?

Ultherapy is a branded device that uses the HIFU principle. The principle is the same; the device, settings and price differ.
